Unlike most of the other pages on this site-the page deals just with songs and not with actual albums. It's a not 100% complete, but it tells you most of what you need to know about hard to find ABBA and ABBA solo stuff...
A list of ABBA's Rare and unreleased tracks..
ABBA'S body of work includes a number of rarities.. A few of the tracks are songs that were released only in Sweden , some were recorded for private use. A few are a important live recordings that never have been officially released, some are songs that simply have never been released..
ABBA didn't actually leave a lot of extra songs "in the can" when recording their albums. Bjorn and Benny never wrote no more than 18 possible songs (usually no more than 14) during the preparation of an album. For most of the their albums there appear to be only a handful of extra tracks, many of which have appeared either as b-sides or were unearthed in 1994 on the ABBA box set. What follows is a list of the best known rare and unreleased songs.. Not included are any of the (mostly b-sides) bonus songs found on any of the eight 2002 remastered studio albums, working titles ,or songs that have never been bootlegged..
Early Rarities 1970-1974 California Here We Come (Tv performance by Festfolk, 1970) Cecelia (unreleased track)1972 En Karusell (Swedish version -Merry Go
Round) 1972 Ring Ring (various mixes) .Wer
Im Wartesaal Der Liebe Steht
Another Town, Another Train (German
version) ABBA's early singles included a handful of Swedish, German, and French versions of songs that were also released in English, as well two Bjorn vocals that were only released in Swedish...There was also a rare greetings to Folk park record (not listed) which doesn't include any new music on it... |
Outakes from ABBA's 1975 album Rikki Rock and Roller 1974 These early songs we have heard on the box set in truncated versions... |
Outakes from Arrival sessions Fernando 1975 (swedish demo version) heard on the boxset Monsieur,Monsieur (unreleased) 1976 The early version (and A very interesting version )of My Life, My Love... The "National" commercial 1976 A new version of "Fernando' that had lyrics trying to sell appliances for an Australian firm called "National".. The most notable of the rare attempts to use ABBA music in a commerical... "Dancing Queen" alternate lyric- A filmed studio rehearsel of the sessions for "Dancing Queen The clip was first shown on the MR. Trendsetter Swedish TV special about Stig Anderson this was also is seen and heard on "The Winner Takes it All" and Super Troupers special. It has a couple of lines of lyric not heard on the final version...Why are those girls wearing sunglasses inside? |
Live outakes 1977 a.Thank You For The Music Original live version of the mini-musical ,Girl With the Golden Hair included..four songs and incidental dialogue and music (unreleased) These versions are significantly different than the final studio versions....
More live rarities from 1977 tour, three of which were ignored when it came to compiling ABBA's live album..."I am an A"and "Get on a Carousel", are two completely new but only recorded live songs rejected for release by B&B....Both of which are worthy of being released. |
Outakes from THE ALBUM Scaramouche 1977 Take A chance on me (instrumental working version) heard on the boxset in snippets |
Outakes from Voulez-Vous
sessions Once again, more songs heard only heard on the box set in truncated versions... The Chiquitita Story (Arms of Rosalita) (unreleased) 1978 This mix was put together for use on the 1994 box set by Micke Tretow to show the ABBA recording process on the song Chiquitita but this idea was rejected by B&B, You can hear a snippet of this track in the THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL Video... |
1979 rarities Chiquitita (Live at Unicef) 1979 lip sync with live clapping...There
also numerous other interesting ABBA TV recordings all of which
will probably never be released on records... Privately released 12 inch single given in June 1979 as a tribute to Polar Vp Ms. Gorel Hanser, and a very good record, worthy of release.
Infectious and memorable
but unfinished rehearsel track..The alternate version of "Rubber
Ball Man' This is the more finished ,but still truncated box set version of under My Sun/Rubber Ball Man, and the great melody is shot down by some pretty stupid lyrics. This melody was probably worth another try. I'm Still alive (unreleased) These last four songs are LIVE tracks from the 1979 tour, I'm Still Alive was actually a new song written by Agnetha, and Bjorn....Gammal Fabodpsalm is a instumental. |
1980's rarities Burning My Bridges 1980 A Bjorn vocal found truncated on ABBA undeleted medley. ON AND ON AND ON 1980 Version with additional lyrics (made available on 2005 Box set) this version was originally
heard on the promo clip for this song. Nationalsång (unreleased) 1980 The early totally instrumental
version of "Anthem" from Chess.. This two sided record was privately issued in January 1981 This was a tribute record for Stig this time, not as good as "Sang to Gorel" but still listenable. Ja må hon leva (Sång till Gudrun)./Happy Birthday to You ) 1981 A Happy Birthday tribute
done for Stig's wife, Gudrun which is not that interesting...
truncated box set track Fanfare for Ice hockey World Championship '81 a short synthesizer fanfare that was released only privately as part of a Polar annual report ,but also used as a opening fanfare for the Dick Cavett meets ABBA special. Don't Fence Me In (impromptu singing) From Dick Cavett meets ABBA special. Nu er det jul igen 1981 (unreleased) A German radio recording of members of ABBA somehow performing this Swedish traditional Christmas song..One source says this comes from 1974. Just like that (La La version )(1982) The holy grail of unreleased ABBA records, simply because it's probqably the best of their unreleased recordings. .Just like That (sax version)(released in
truncated box set version)) The three of the six 1982 tracks that have not made onto one of the remasters . All great records, of course.
Not really ABBA, this is an unreleased Chess demo, the only one to feature one of the girls, this is the early version of "Heaven Help My heart" .Sadly, It's hard to imagine this recording ever being released officially because the lyrics are just dummy lyrics that do not make any gramatical sense. "When The Waves Roll Out to Sea" and others There were other Chess demos some of which have been bootlegged, but the only ABBA member featured is Benny.. Tiveds Hambo 1986 (unreleased)Swedish TV recording. The last time A,B,B, F sang professionally together was on Tv tribute to Stig. It was a ragged unrehearsed version of an old Stig song.....Touching really....Of course they hated the greedy bastard at that point, but we wont get into that.... 1988 Non existent rumoured recordings John Tobler said in one of the books that it was rumoured that four songs recorded for a 1988 ABBA comeback with the titles -"It's Been Swell", "Something On My Mind", "It's Alright Darling", and "I Just Wasn't Thinking". but this was totally untrue...Geez, even ABBA never had songtitles that bad... |

the songs listed below as well a number of other filmed rarities
Orchestra. Frida also made a series of TV specials from the Grand
Hotel in Stockholm in 1982 which included many songs not available
elsewhere. Many of these songs can found on a CD issued by ABBAMAIL
called TELEVISION. TELEVISION also has her very first appearance
on Swedish TV doing "En Ledig Dag" in 1967. Frida also
sang some duets in concert with
Marie Frederickson that haven't been released. There at least
one track was known to have been left off the SOMETHING's GOING
ON album -"Shot Down In Action". There were two unreleased
tracks left off the 1971 Frida album, and a couple of the songs
Frida wrote for the Shine album were left unrecorded? and unreleased.

THE HOOTENANNY SINGERS
Nearly all of the Hootz original 1960's studio albums are not in print, let alone rare the a& b-sides, ep tracks or foreign language tracks, some of which were never compiled on albums. .It was would nice to have greater availabilty of the Hootnanny's Early sixties work. Perhaps a well annoatated two -cd set would do the trick....the work of the Hootenanny's does not sell as well as it used to....
The HEP STARS
Most of the tracks on their singles have been compiled-and most of their 1960's stuff is on Cd, with the exception of their It's Been a Long Long Time which seems to be out of print.
The HEP STARS various post Benny studio albums are out of print and have not made it onto CD....
BENNY ANDERSSON SOLO
Benny's music for film is hard to find as are many of the songs that he produced for other people.FONT>
WHOMEVER ELSE-RELATED ARTISTS and Tributes
