John Bernhardt & ABBA THE ALBUMS ask the musical question?
DOES ABBA BELONG IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME?
On DECEMBER 15, 2009-ABBA was chosen to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame along with Genesis, the Hollies, Jimmy Cliff, and The Stooges. They were inducted in New York City on March 15, 2010. DOES ABBA BELONG In the Rock And Roll Hall of fame? An interesting question, since they are quite probably the largest selling artist of the Rock era not to be in the hall of fame up to now.... What are The criteria for being picked to the hall of fame as a performers ?
The Foundation's nominating committee, composed of rock and roll
historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category.
Ballots are then sent to an international voting body more than
500 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number
of votes, and more than 50 percent of the vote, are inducted.
The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each
year." ....from the HALL OF FAME website...
Probably the most legitimate reason that ABBA had not been chosen is that they are really not thought of as a rock and roll act. Like the Bee Gees, they are often labeled as a Disco act even though they only recorded about dozen disco style recordings. ABBA actually recorded a highly electic catalog of songs, they dabbled into glamrock, music hall,Spanish pop, Hendrix influenced guitar songs, schalger, folk-pop,fifties style rock,synth-pop, bubble gum, etc. ABBA's music could best be summed up as Euro-pop. ABBA's songwriters were inspired to write songs and record music by the Beatles and they were working in the same self-written pop rock tradition as the Beatles. Most ABBA records have a backbeat-their recordings are not Tony Bennett records. ABBA's band was two guitars, a electric bass, a drum kit and keyboards. The difference is that ABBA's version of this music though was influenced not by Rythem and Blues, but by European Schlagers, Swedish folk music, French Chansons, and the darkness of Swedish winters. The Roll and Roll Hall of Fame does not just include pure Rock and Roll acts. Many of the acts in Hall of Fame are not strictly rock and roll, there are country, hip-hop and jazz artists-and there whole heap of soul acts. The hall selection committee actually un the past had a decided bias towards picking doo-wop groups, rhythm & blues and soul acts. The acts most similar to ABBA that are already in the hall are perhaps the BEE GEES , The Mamas and The Papas and the recent inductee-Madonna. These three acts did not do a lot of straight rock and roll records, but they are widely respected. ABBA has been an influential group due to their being the first major superstar act from from a non-English speaking country.
Another reason ABBA was lightly regarded by some as that they recorded a decidedly commercial body of work, that sometimes was a little light it least in the beginning on artistic achievement.A lot of ABBA fans sense that the other reason ABBA was not inducted for so long is simply that there is a bias in favor of American acts and ABBA is the quintessential non-American pop act...The success of Mamma Mia made ABBA a much better known act in America, and so ABBA became less obscure.
Many other rock and pop acts been left out of the hall. In any selection process biases creep in, some people are left out and some are inexplicably chosen. The Rock and Roll of Fame seems to have gotten into the habit of choosing lots of minor acts and leaving out bigger acts.
One might certainly question the body of works of many of the following acts currently in the hall., especially in comparison to acts not in the hall of fame.
Look at this list of Genuine Hall of Famers.....
Bobby Darin,The Four Seasons, The Yardbirds. Ritchie Valens, Duane Eddy,The (Young) Rascals,The Buffalo Springfield, Lloyd Price, Gene Vincent, Curtis Mayfield,The Staple Singers,The Moonglows ,Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers,The Flamingos, Jackson Browne, Ritchie Valens,Isaac Hayes,Ramones,AC/DC, the Dells and ZZTop...Percy Sledge, Blondie, The Sex Pistols and Miles Davis( great artist, but is he rock and roll?), The Ronettes, Patti Smith, The Ventures...
Some of these acts are clearly important rock 'n rollers, but
a lot of them have a very small body of important work.. A lot
of of the early rock and rollers legends didn't actually make many record albums.
Some have wondered why (as of 2010)The Monkees (well maybe not), Joan Baez, Hall and Oates, Dionne Warwick, Frank Zappa,The Jam, Cat Stevens, Kate Bush, KISS,Three Dog Night, Cliff Richard, Donna Summer, Rush, Doobie Brothers, Dire Straits, Jim Croce, Rush, Joy Division, Journey, Heart, Judy Collins, Chicago, Fairport Convention, , The Cars, Boston, Def Leppard, Yes, Tom Waits, Linda Ronstadt, the Moody Blues, ELO , Neil Diamond and many others are not in the hall ....But then I'm not in the hall either, I am in the bedroom....And we could have also included long ignored Black Sabbath,Genesis, Van Halen, and Lynyrd Skynyrd in that list a few years ago...
One conclusion I have reached is that are far
too many acts!- in the rock
and hall of fame, and that is why the hall of fame does not have
a lot of credibility.... They should really just stick to acts
that are open and shut cases, and their are certainly are not
five such acts of a year......The widely respected Baseball of
Fame usually limits itself to picking just a couple of players
a year, though they occasionally select non-players or neglected
players from previous era via a veterans committee.
